Forty species of native freshwater mussels live on the refuge, including the federally endangered fanshell and pink mucket. Mussels are important to river ecosystems, filtering water and providing food for other wildlife. Living on the bottom of the river, this fascinating group of wildlife require fish to serve as hosts for their young.
In recent years, non-native zebra mussels invaded the Ohio River, posing a serious threat to native species. Invasive species
