Newtown Creek Natural Resource Damage Assessment
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are conducting a Natural Resource Damage Assessment at this Superfund site in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. Newtown Creek has an industrial legacy that goes back 150 years. It is contaminated with hazardous substances such as petroleum, polychlorinated biphenyls, copper, and chlorinated solvents. Approximately 17-30 million gallons of petroleum product underlay the Greenpoint area along Newtown Creek.
