The
New Jersey Field Office
Conducts the Fourth Stakeholders Work Session
for the Hackensack Meadowlands Initiative
|
|
On
June 13, 2005, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service's New Jersey Field Office sponsored
the Fourth Stakeholders Work Session for the
Hackensack Meadowlands Initiative at the headquarters
of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission in
Lyndhurst, New Jersey, continuing the series
of work sessions held by the New Jersey Field
Office since October 2000. Seventy representatives
of governmental agencies, environmental groups,
elected officials, and researchers met to
discuss partnering for remediation, restoration,
protection, and management of the Meadowlands
ecosystem, which comprises some 5,400 acres
of wetlands in Bergen and Hudson Counties
and is an important stopover for migratory
birds on the Atlantic Flyway. The New Jersey
Meadowlands Commission, the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, the National Fish and Wildlife
Foundation, and the New Jersey Division of
Fish and Wildlife cosponsored the event. The
New Jersey Field Office's Supervisor, Clifford
G. Day, presented Special Appreciation Awards
to Leonard Houston of the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, New York District, Martin McHugh
of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife,
and Robert Ceberio of the New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission in recognition of their noteworthy
contribution to supporting the Hackensack
Meadowlands Initiative. The New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission provided not only the facility
but also breakfast and lunch for the day.
Speakers
from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
and five other panels presented information
on activities being conducted. New Jersey
Field Office Senior Biologist Stan Hales provided
an overview of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service's preliminary conservation planning
for the Meadowlands. James Souder, Projects
Director for U.S. Senator Jon Corzine, and
Lisa Plevin, Deputy State Director for U.S.
Senator Frank Lautenberg's office also spoke
to the stakeholders.
At
the session, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service's Northeast Regional Director Marvin
Moriarty presented Congressman Steven R. Rothman
(NJ9th) with the North American Waterfowl
Management Plan Committee's prestigious National
Great Blue Heron Award. Past recipients include
former Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson and
Vermont's Senator Patrick Leahy. During his
tenure in office, Mr. Rothman has secured
$7.5 million for Meadowlands research, study,
restoration, remediation, and land acquisition.
Congressman Rothman addressed the stakeholders,
encouraging them once again to persevere in
the effort to transform the Meadowlands into
an environmental park. President Theodore
Roosevelt (New Jersey Field Office Communications
Specialist Jim Cramer) then put in a surprise
appearance, admonishing his audience to further
his dream for conservation in the restoration
of the Meadowlands.

| Where
are we? |
|
The
New Jersey Field Office conducted four stakeholder
work sessions for the Hackensack Meadowlands
Initiative: October 17, 2000; May 23, 2001;
October 31, 2001; and June 13, 2005. We are
pleased to cosponsor the fourth stakeholder
work session with the National Fish and Wildlife
Foundation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
New York District, the New Jersey Division
of Fish and Wildlife, and the New Jersey Meadowlands
Commission. The fourth work session updated
stakeholders on recent on-the-ground activities
as well as conservation planning efforts,
introduced the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's
preliminary conservation planning efforts
for the Hackensack Meadowlands, and provided
an open forum to discuss opportunities and
strategies to integrate fish and wildlife
conservation into long-term planning and to
promote the remediation, restoration, protection,
and management of the Meadowlands ecosystem.
More detailed information is presented in
the following fact sheets.

|
|
| Where
do we go from here? |
| Future
stakeholder work sessions may focus
on a specific area, such as dealing
with invasive species or contaminants
in the Meadowlands. There is no way
to reason or plan effective partnerships
into being; building partnerships is
accomplished only by working in close
collaboration. Perhaps a good way forward
would be via work sessions in which
stakeholders actually plan the actions
that will resolve a problem and agree
on the responsibilities of each partner
in those actions. Perhaps you have suggestions
for future stakeholder work sessions.
If you do, please contact the New Jersey
Field Office or any of the work session's
cosponsors. Help us to achieve our goal:
to restore and protect the Hackensack
Meadowlands ecosystem. |
