Working Cooperatively to Protect
Our State's Substantial Fish and Wildlife Resources

Federal agencies conduct a wide variety of activities that affect New Jersey's natural resources, including fish and wildlife. As directed by various national laws, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (Service) works cooperatively with these federal agencies to ensure that their actions are protective of our State's substantial fish and wildlife resources - resources that contribute to the quality of life for New Jersey residents and visitors alike. For example, the Service assists:

  • defense agencies in managing wildlife resources on military installations;
  • the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in avoiding adverse impacts to wildlife from civil works projects such as flood control, dredging, and beach replenishment;
  • transportation agencies in avoiding adverse impacts to wildlife from road and rail projects;
  • federal and State permitting agencies in avoiding adverse impacts to wildlife from permitted activities in wetlands or open waters; and
  • the Corps and other permitting agencies in enhancing wildlife habitats through civil works ecosystem restoration projects, and through compensatory mitigation required for permitted activities that involve unavoidable adverse impacts on wetlands.

The Service generally assists other federal agencies by providing technical review of plans and permit applications, participating on planning or review teams, and providing recommendations consistent with our Mitigation Policy (see link in right column). The Service also collaborates with other agencies to form new conservation partnerships to address emerging issues, such as collisions of migratory birds with communication towers and wind energy turbines. By working closely with other agencies, the Service helps to make protections for wildlife resources an integral part of federally funded or permitted projects, supporting the continued survival of New Jersey's wild living resources.
