Management

The refuge provides nesting habitat for the Federally-listed piping plover, as well as the State-listed common and least tern. The refuge also provides habitat for staging roseate terns during their fall migration. In the past few years, we have also seen increased use of the refuge by seals. Due to the wildlife activity that occurs throughout the seasons, certain areas of the refuge are closed at times to public access in order to protect wildlife and ensure public safety.

The Trustees of Reservations(TTOR) is one of our most important conservation partners on Nantucket. They often provide assistance to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the refuge.
