Are lead fishing sinkers a hazard to wildlife?  Yes.  Loons, swans, heron and other waterbirds can die from lead poisoning after swallowing lead fishing sinkers and jigs lost by anglers.  Consumption of lead sinkers and jigs may account for 10 to 50 percent of adult loon mortality.  Certain National Wildlife Refuges have placed bans on the use of lead-containing fishing gear.

Are sportfish and game in Maine safe to eat?  The Division of Environmental Health within the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention is responsible for developing warnings on eating fish and game based on the presence of contaminants.  Warnings on eating fish and game for Maine freshwater and marine fish have been issued by the Division.  The consumption advisory for freshwater fish is also summarized in the annual Open Water Fishing Regulations booklet published by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
