New York District - Office of Law Enforcement
About Us
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, New York District Office of Law Enforcement (OLE) is located in Valley Stream, N.Y., five miles from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The Port of New York is the largest and busiest designated port in the nation. Annually, over 143,000 international flights carrying 22.4 million passengers are processed in JFK and more than 1.9 million tons of air cargo and air mail transit through the port. The Valley Stream OLE is a Regional Permit Office and issues import/export licenses, Designated Port Exception permits, and certain CITES permits for all of the Northeast Region. The office reviews upwards of 35,000 declarations of wildlife imports/exports each year and conducts inspections of wildlife shipments.
Commercial importers and exporters may submit documents to this email address: permitsR5LE@fws.gov.
Special Agents, Wildlife Inspectors, and a legal support team comprise the Valley Stream office. They work to facilitate legal trade in wildlife and detect, investigate, and prevent illegal trade. Special Agents target the commercialization of both foreign and domestic species of protected wildlife, as well as investigate threats to native populations of wildlife. Wildlife Inspectors are responsible for regulating wildlife traveling internationally via passenger terminals, cargo facilities, the United States Postal Service international mail facility, and express carriers.
Trade in wildlife, particularly endangered and threatened species, is highly regulated. The OLE enforces a variety of laws, regulations and treaties created to protect wildlife, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). Individuals or businesses interested in transporting wildlife internationally should review the information for importers and exporters provided on the Service website, as well as Title 50 of the Code of Federal Regulations as it pertains to the Service. Importers/exporters must also be familiar with all other state and federal agency import/export requirements.
For further information or to report a violation, contact the Valley Stream, N.Y., Office of Law Enforcement by phone or email. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM:
