The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting. |

Queens man who smuggled rare fish in suitcase sentenced to one year in jailDec. 21, 2011A Queens man was sentenced to one year in jail for smuggling Asian arowanas into the U.S. Asian arowanas, a bony-tongued, freshwater fish are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act and are often sold for up to $8,000 a piece on the black market. The defendant, Chee Chaw, was also fined $4,000. |

Ivory Smuggler Pleads GuiltyDec. 6, 2011Lin Feng Xu, an antique dealer in China, pleaded guilty today to smuggling and violating the Endangered Species Act in connection with the illegal export of African elephant ivory in his carry-on luggage. In pleading guilty, Xu has admitted that he attempted to export 18 ivory carvings, worth approximately $50,000. |

Philadelphia businessman indicted for African elephant ivory traffickingJuly 26, 2011The owner of an African arts store in Philadephia has been arrested and charged with 10 felony counts for orchestrating the smuggling of elephant ivory from Africa and selling new carvings to customers in the United States as antiques. Service special agents, whose investigation secured conspiracy, smuggling, and wildlife trafficking counts against the defendant, seized approximately one ton of African elephant ivory linked to the man's business during the course of the investigation. |

Woody, who previously directed law enforcement and security programs for the Bureau of Land Management, has been tapped to serve as the new chief of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement. Illegal ivory importers sentenced to prisonMar. 3, 2011The final two defendants among six convicted of illegally importing elephant ivory disguised as African handicrafts have been sentenced to prison. Kemo Sylla and Mamadi Doumbouya were sentenced to 10 months and 14 months incarceration, respectively, for their felony convictions under the Lacey Act, which, together with the U.S. Endangered Species Act, prohibits the sale or transportation of protected wildlife, including elephant ivory. |

Mass. man receives 33 months in prison for trafficking in narwhal tusks and sperm whale teethMar. 2, 2011David Place, owner of Manor House Antiques Cooperative in Nantucket, Mass., was sentenced to 33 months in prison yesterday for illegally importing and trafficking in narwhal tusks and sperm whale teeth. Narwhals and sperm whales are both protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). |
