The port of Champlain, NY is a gateway port into the United States for passengers and commercial trade originating from the Montreal, Quebec metropolitan area. Champlain is located 42 miles south of Montreal, 178 miles north of Albany, NY and 5 miles west of the New York and Vermont border. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife Inspection office opened in June, 2002, primarily to support the significant volume of imports for the fur garment trade. In addition to processing the large volume of passenger and truck traffic at the Port of Champlain, the Wildlife Inspectors are also responsible for several other crossings in the area. These include: Trout River, Fort Covington and Ogdensburg, NY. In addition, pleasure boats entering the U.S. via Lake Champlain are inspected at Rouses Point, NY.
