Marsh Bird Survey
Starting in early June, observers visit Harpers Meadow , Sweat Meadow, Leonard Marsh
and the Dead Cambridge River to record activity
of target marsh birds. Target species are Virginia rail, sora
rail, American bittern, common snipe and pied billed grebe. Virginia
rail and common snipe are the most frequently encountered species. Each marsh
is visited 3 times between June and July every year.
Land Bird
Survey

Observers walk a route and stop at designated points
to record all birds seen or heard. The survey data will be used to
identify birds occurring on the Refuge during the breeding season, to
associate species with habitats, to monitor changes in bird populations, and to
help make appropriate management decisions. The most abundant land bird
species thus far are red-eyed vireo, ovenbird, hermit thrush, winter wren,
magnolia warbler, northern parula, white-throated sparrow, yellow rumped
warbler, common yellowthroat and Swainson's thrush.
Migration Surveys
During the spring and fall migration, surveys are
conducted on waterfowl and shorebirds migrating through the area.
