Visitor Opportunities

Public Access at James River National Wildlife Refuge

To visit James River NWR, reservations are required seventy-two (72) hours in advance of the proposed visit.  Requests can be made by contacting Cyrus Brame, Outdoor Recreation Planner, at (804) 829-9020 or cyrus_brame@fws.gov

Only non-consumptive activities are allowed in the refuge.

  • Permitting and Access

The refuge tries to accommodate all requests fitting these criteria. However, if the date of your request conflicts with a management activity (prescribed burn, biological survey, etc.); an alternate date will be proposed. Once access is approved, the requesting group or individual is provided written permission for the date and time of the visit.  A permit is provided for placement on the dashboard of the requesting party’s vehicle. Additionally, a map, highlighting designated trails and parking details, will be sent.
