Great Backyard Bird Count at the Refuge

Sunday, February 19th, 8:00 AM

Join other bird watching enthusiasts by surveying upland and riparian habitats in search of a diverse suite of avian species.  A local naturalist will serve as your guide and collect a running list of observed species.  Totals will be submitted and become part of a nationwide effort to track the migration movements of birds. National Wildlife Week Celebration

Saturday, March 10th, 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM

Visit the limited Wildlife Refuge trails along the undeveloped shorelines of Powell’s Creek. Volunteer Work Day

Saturday, March 31st, 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM

Volunteers are needed to help with needed improvements to the Wildlife Refuge. Some of the tasks include vegetation management, structure demolition, and sign installation. Spring Canoe Trip

Search for Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Egrets, and Osprey to celebrate Earth Day.  Local naturalists will be your guide to interpret the ecologically and culturally rich waterway of Powell’s Creek and adjacent hiking trail.  Participation is limited. Sunrise and Nature Photography Event

Saturday, July 7th , 5:30 AM-8:00 AM

What better way to prepare for Independence Day than observing Bald Eagles in the wild. Gain access to the rarely visited shoreline of the Refuge’s newest acquisition, Blair’s Wharf.  Located in the heart of a bald eagle concentration area, along one of the largest eagle roosting areas on the East Coast, you will have the opportunity to observe and possibly photograph this stately species.  In an effort to minimize disturbance, participants can bring a camouflaged photo blind or view from a FWS designated location. End of Summer Paddle

Join a nationwide effort in restoring and enhancing our nation’s public lands. Staff from the James River Wildlife Refuge will direct volunteers on projects related to trail work, facility maintenance, and landscaping.  Refreshments will be provided.  Participation is limited.  Pre-registration is required.
