Spring Into Nature - (Previously called "Open House") Our annual celebration to welcome spring back to the swamps. Nature related exhibits, vendors, activities and nature programs. Free and open to the public. Held the fourth Saturday in April, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Youth Fishing Derby -Held the first Saturday in June. Open to children age 17 and under.

Youth Spring Turkey Hunt - Held the first Sunday in May. Registration and attendance at an orientation is required. Open to junior hunters 12-17 years of age.

Youth Waterfowl Hunt - Held the first Sunday of the regular state waterfowl season. Pre-registration and attendance at an orientation is required.Open to junior hunters 12-17 years of age.

Visitor Contact Station


Visitors can view displays, obtain brochures and talk with personnel at the refuge headquarters/visitor contact station. Normal operating hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday except holidays and weekends 9:00 am to 5:00 pm spring and fall – please call in advance to verify. The headquarters/visitor contact station is located on Casey Road, one mile north of the Alabama traffic light.

School Field Trips
Connect children with nature. The refuge offers both guided and self-guided programs. Contact refuge staff to make reservations.

Other Opportunities

Feeder Road

Feeder Road is open to foot traffic year round. Park at the Kanyoo Trail parking lot and take the trail to the west, between the the barn and Waterfowl Permit Station.

The road is open to vehicles from October 1 - the end of February. Vehicles may access Feeder Road from the south end only off of Route 77 and travel for approximatley 1.25 miles where there is a turn around point.

Canoeing

Explore the primative beauty of Oak Orchard Creek. Canoes, kayaks or fishing boats without motors may access Oak Orchard Creek between Knowlesville Road and Route 63. Watch for obstructions including beaver dams.

Duck Stamps

Federal Duck Stamps are required for migratory bird hunting, sell for $15.00 and are available for purchase at the refuge headquarters/visitor contact station. Please call in advance.
