Maine Coastal Seabird, Wading Bird and Eagle Nesting Islands

List of Nationally Significant Islands

There are 4,617 islands along the Maine coast. Of this total, 616 have historical or nesting populations of seabirds, wading birds and/or eagles. A collaborative effort, led by Gulf of Maine Coastal Program, brought state and NGO conservation partners together to identify 377 nationally significant islands. Of these 377 islands, 151 currently lack permanent protection. In addition, only nine of the 377 nesting islands are undergoing annual active management programs designed to maintain natural diversity of nesting species, particularly the more diminutive seabirds such as terns.
