Volunteering

You can make a difference.

Every year hundreds  of dedicated volunteers devote their time and talents to the refuge.  Last year, over 4,000 hours of volunteer time were donated to the refuge.

Even before the Great Swamp became a National Wildlife Refuge, local involvement was important.  Area residents have been protecting the Swamp from development since New Jersey was first settled.  It was volunteer efforts that saved the Swamp from becoming a major jetport.  Since 1960, when the Great Swamp was designated a National Wildlife Refuge, volunteering has continued to be important.  Every year volunteers make programs like Wood duck nest surveys, duck banding and the annual refuge clean-up possible.

Some volunteers formed a Friends group for the refuge.  The Friends of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a non-profit group that builds support for the refuge mission and programs.
