Internships and Volunteers

The Great Dismal Swamp NWR accepts applications for internship and volunteer positions on an ongoing basis. Internships usually commit for summer duties, but there is some flexibilty in this dependant upon projects and other refuge needs.

Volunteers

Refuge volunteers assist refuge staff in a number of ways. Duties are assigned based upon refuge needs, your skills, your availability, and your request. We now have volunteers that assist with special events, with general office duties, with trail maintenance projects, and with biological surveys. Additional opportunities exist. Contact Deloras Freeman at 757-986-3705 for volunteer application.

A New Volunteer workshop is held each January. However, new volunteers are accepted throughout the year.

Internships

nternships are non-paid positions; however, housing and a food stipend will be provided. Local interns are given a per mile travel allowance. See individual listings to obtain detailed information.

In most cases, to be considered for an internship position, an applicant must be able to stay a minimum of three months. However, in rare cases, slightly shorter internships can be scheduled. Applicants should discuss availability and needs with the appropriate contact person.
