Brigantine Division
ATLANTIC AND OCEAN COUNTIES, NEW JERSEY
Map

Brigantine Division hunt units will be open to the hunting of migratory waterfowl, rails, coots and moorhens subject to current State and Federal regulations and seasons (for NJ Coastal Hunt Zone) and the following special regulations and provisions.

1. Hunters must possess valid license and signed Federal/State Duck stamps.   All waterfowl hunters must have a 2006/2007 NJ HIP number written on their license.

2. All hunters (including rail, coot and moorhen hunters) must use or possess only approved nontoxic shot.

3. Hunters may not use or possess more than 50 shotshells per day in Hunting Unit 1.

4. All hunting blind materials, boats and decoys must be removed at the end of each hunting day. Permanent and pit blinds are not permitted.

5. No foot access. Access is by boat only.

6. No units shall be occupied before 4:00 am. No camping allowed.

7. The distribution of bait and/or the hunting over bait is prohibited.

8. Boating laws are strictly enforced. Hunters are responsible for complying with all applicable boating regulations. Tides and weather are important factors to consider to avoid becoming stranded and exposed to low temperatures until tides change and/or winds subside.

9. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited.

Check to be sure that you have a valid license and your gun is capable of holding no more than 3 shells before you hunt. Each waterfowl hunter 16 years of age and over must carry on his person a valid Federal Duck Stamp and New Jersey Waterfowl Stamp signed in ink across the face of the stamps. All Refuge Hunting Units are bounded by green refuge "Public Hunting Area" signs.

Units 1, 3, 4 and 5 are accessible during all tides. During low tide, caution is necessary from Landing Creek to Hammock Cove and in feeder creeks. Hunters not familiar with the area should enter at low tide and return at high tide.

Unit 2 is accessible only during half or higher tides.

3. Hunters may not use or possess more than 25 shotshells/day.

5. Hunting sites are limited to one party of hunters. Sites are available on a first-come/first-served basis. No sites shall be occupied before 4:00 a.m. No camping allowed.

6. No "jump" shooting allowed. Access is by boat only. No foot access.

7. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited.

8. The distribution of bait and/or the hunting over bait is prohibited on wildlife refuge units.

9. Refuge lands north of East Bay Avenue and south of the Gunning River to Log Creek Pond are closed to all public use.

UNIT C - CLAM ISLANDS HUNTING UNIT

The Clam Islands Hunting Unit shown on the reverse side will be open to the hunting of migratory waterfowl, rails, coots and moorhens subject to current State and Federal regulations and seasons (for NJ Coastal Hunt Zone) and the following special regulations and provisions.

As of the 2000, 2001 season, Clam Island no longer has designated hunting sites. See below for new regulations.

1. Hunters must possess valid license and signed Federal/State Duck stamps.  All waterfowl hunters must have a 2006/2007 NJ HIP number written on their license.

2. All hunters (including rail, coot and moorhen hunters) must use or possess only approved nontoxic shot.

Turtle Cove/Bonnet Island Hunting Units shown on the reverse side will be open to the hunting of migratory waterfowl, rails, coots and moorhens subject to current State and Federal regulations and seasons (for NJ Coastal Hunt Zone) and the following special regulations and provisions.

On Bonnet Island, only the south two (2) islands posted with green "Public Hunting" signs are open to hunting. The remaining north part of the island is closed.

1. Hunters must possess valid license and signed Federal/State Duck stamps.  All waterfowl hunters must have a 2006/2007 NJ HIP number written on their license.

2. All hunters (including rail, coot and moorhen hunters) must use or possess only approved nontoxic shot.

3. Hunters may not use or possess more than 25 shotshells/day.

4.  No "jump" shooting allowed.  A minimum of six (6) decoys is required.

5. All hunting blind material, boats and decoys must be removed at the end of each hunting day. Permanent and pit blinds are not permitted.

6. Hunters may not occupy the refuge before 4:00 a.m. No camping allowed.

7. No foot access. Access is by boat only.

8. Use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited.

The Metedeconk River Hunting Unit shown on the reverse side will be open to the hunting of migratory waterfowl, rails, coots, and moorhens subject to current State and Federal regulations and seasons (for NJ Coastal Hunt Zone) and the following special regulations and provisions.
 

1.   Hunters must possess a valid license, signed Federal and State Duck Stamps,  and a 2006/2007 NJ Harvest Information Program (HIP) number.

2.   All hunters (including rail, coot, and moorhen hunters) must use only approved nontoxic shot.

3.   Hunters may not use or possess more than 25 shotshells/day.

4.   Jump shooting is not allowed.  A minimum of six (6) decoys is required.

5.   All hunting blind material, boats, and decoys must be removed at the end of each hunting day.  Permanent and pit blinds are not permitted.

6.   Hunters may not occupy the refuge before 4:00 a.m.  No camping is allowed.

7.   Foot access is allowed from the end of Tilton Road only.

8.   Use or possession of alcoholic beverages while hunting is prohibited.

9.   The distribution of bait and/or hunting over bait is prohibited.

10.  Boating laws are strictly enforced.  Hunters are responsible for complying with all applicable boating regulations.  Tides and weather are important factors to consider to avoid becoming stranded and exposed to low temperatures until tides change and/or winds subside.

Impoundment Hunts

BRIGANTINE DIVISION IMPOUNDMENT AREA
2006 SNOW GOOSE HUNT RULES
(NOTE:  These hunts will only occur if the amount of Snow Geese warrants a hunt)

 

A special Snow goose hunt will be held in the impoundment area of the

Brigantine Division on the following Wednesdays if the amount of Snow geese warrants :

Hunters wishing to participate in each week’s hunt must call the Refuge office (609-652-1666)

to register the Wednesday before.  Phones will not be answered before 8:00 am.

Reservations left on the Refuge’s answering machine will not be accepted.

 

The following rules apply:

 

·        A 2006 hunting license with NJ HIP number and current, properly signed, Federal and State Duck Stamps are required.

 

·        The Refuge Headquarters building will be open 4:45 a.m. the day of the hunt. The lottery for hunting sites will occur at 5:00 a.m. sharp. Hunters arriving late will not be admitted.

 

·        All check-ins must be done in person.

 

·        Hunt sites will be chosen by lottery the day of the hunt. You must hunt the site you select.

 

·        There are up to 19 impoundment sites with no more than five (5) hunters per site.  Saltmarsh sites are not used for this hunt.

 

·        No more than two (2) vehicles on the dike per site. Additional parking is available at Refuge headquarters.

 

·        Bring a non-motorized boat, waders or dog to retrieve downed birds.

 

·        Hunt within 150 yards of your assigned site marker.

 

·        Do not change hunting sites without prior approval of refuge staff.

 

·        A minimum of six (6) decoys must be used during your hunt.

 

·        Hunting is NOT permitted from any roadway. Shooting across any roadway is NOT permitted. All weapons must be unloaded and cased while within any vehicle. All weapons must be unloaded when you are walking on any road.                                           

 

·        All hunting ends by sunset. All hunters must check out at the refuge headquarters, regardless of success, within one (1) hour past sunset. Data will be collected on all harvested geese.

 

·        Obey speed limit of 10 or 15 mph, as posted, at all times. Speeders will be ticketed. When driving to and from site, headlights must be on. Be aware of two-way traffic.

 

·        Do not block roadways or park in front of any gates (open or closed) with your vehicle or any hunting equipment (boats, decoys, kennels, etc.).

 

·        Remove all trash - including spent shotshells. What you bring in, take out.

 

·        All federal and state migratory bird hunting laws apply. A summary of Federal Regulations is provided on the back of this page. It is your responsibility to know the regulations.

 

·        Bag limit is _____ geese.

 

·        Hunters leaving the refuge early will not be re-admitted until after 12:00 pm.

 

·        Walk in hunters will only be admitted between 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Call the refuge prior to arrival to determine availability of sites.

 

·        Any violations may result in the hunter's suspension from current and future impoundment hunts.
