Visitor Centers
The Fisheries Program supports five Visitor Centers at hatcheries in the Northeast:
Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery – East Orland, ME
This facility hosts two visitor centers:
Craig Brook NFH Visitor Center
- Visitors learn about the endangered Atlantic salmon and our efforts to recover the species from the brink of extinction; they can watch salmon up-close in a living stream; see the office of Charlie Atkins, historic father of salmon culture; and, catch up on the history of this salmon hatchery
- Open weekdays from 8:00 am-4:00 pm
- Open weekends from 9:00 am-3:00 pm
- Wheelchair accessible visitor center and restroom
- The Visitor Center is staffed and group tours/presentations are available by appointment – phone: 207-469-6701 ext. #215 to schedule
- Best time to visit is during the salmon spawning season from late October to mid-November or during fry stocking in mid-May when visitors can view recovery efforts in action

- Atlantic salmon angling memorabilia from New England, Canada and England is displayed here
- Open seasonally from July 1 to the end of August
- Hours on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3:00 pm
- Off-season tours can be arranged by calling 207-469-6701 ext 215

Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery – Charles City, VA
- Exhibits focus is on native aquatic species with an emphasis on anadromous fish
- Open seasonally from April-September
- Hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 am-4:30 pm
- Wheelchair accessible visitor center and restroom
- Group tours of facility available by appointment – phone: 804-829-2421 to schedule
- Best time to visit mid-April through mid-May during shad production – visitors can tour the shad culture building
