Conservation and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems

National Fish Habitat Action Plan

The purpose of the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) is to protect, restore and enhance the nations’ fish and aquatic communities through partnerships that foster fish habitat conservation and improve the quality of life for the American people.

There are six approved Fish Habitat Partnerships (FHP) encompassing all or portions of the 13 states in the Northeast region. These include: the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV), Atlantic Coastal FHP (ACFHP), Great Lakes Basin FHP, Ohio River Basin FHP, Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership (SARP), and the system-based Reservoir FHP. These partnerships are coalitions of State, Federal, Tribal and local agencies as well as non-governmental organizations, colleges, businesses and individuals.

Congress funds NFHAP implementation. Administration and coordination of the EBTJV and the ACFHP is conducted by the Northeast Region of the Service.  The Region works with individual FHPs, field staff and the NFHAP Board to identify projects for funding.  The NFHAP received $7.2M in 2010 for this task. The Region received about $1.0M from the total. About $348,000 is used to cover the cost of coordination and partnership development. The EBTJV received $600,000 and the ACFHP received $90,000 for on-the-ground projects in 2010. The GLBFHP and the ORBFHP each received $90,000.

Project priorities are developed by individual FHPs using approved national guidance. Final project funding decisions are made by the Director of the U.S. fish and Wildlife service.
