Grand Opening to be held for Long Island Refuges Visitor Center

The Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex will host a grand opening for their new visitor center on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 10a.m. to 4p.m. at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley, NY. The grand opening ceremony will be held at noon and admission is free. The facility includes an interactive exhibit hall featuring Long Island ecosystems, an environmental education classroom, and a nature store run by the non-profit, Friends of Wertheim. Built to meet the silver level certification criteria of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the facility has a number of “green” features including: water efficient faucets, a geothermal heating and cooling system, recycled flooring and solar photovoltaic panels.
