About the

What we do

Environmental Contaminants biologists and toxicologists work with others to protect, improve and restore the quality of fish, wildlife and habitat resources through the following:

  • Prevent pollution from harming fish and wildlife and the places they live
  • Provide contaminants expertise to Service programs and advise other federal and state agencies in the cleanup and evaluation of sites
  • Investigate how pollution affects fish and wildlife and propose action to minimize the effects
  • Address spills of oil and hazardous chemicals through NRDAR, preventing as much harm as possible and recovering for damages that can't be prevented
  • Make sure cleaning up hazardous waste does not hurt fish and wildlife
