Krishna Gifford

Krishna Gifford, Candidate and Classification Coordinator

Regional Endangered Species Program

Krishna Gifford is a biologist in the Northeast Regional Office Endangered Species Program. Gifford assists the field offices in evaluating whether species should be added to or removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants.

In this job, Gifford applies her educational background in wildlife management and environmental policy, as well as her experience working in different levels of the Service's field, region, and Washington office organization. Gifford has worked for the Service for 17 years, in the endangered species program for the last 13 years, and in the Northeast Region for almost 2 years.

Gifford has worked in all aspects of the Endangered Species program, from candidate conservation to listing, from section 7 consultations to section 10 permits, and from recovery to delisting.

"I consider myself fortunate to have seen many different candidate and listed species in their natural environments," she says. "Actually seeing wildlife in native habitats makes a huge difference in connecting people to why it is important to conserve those species."

Her conservation ethic evolved from watching her parents be responsible land stewards, and from her job as a natural resource instructor at summer camps for elementary school age kids.

Gifford grew up in western Massachusetts and attended the University of Maine (go Black Bears!) for both her bachelor and master's degrees. In addition to Massachusetts and Maine, Gifford has lived in Vermont, Virginia and Texas. She spends her time outside of work with her husband and two cats. Gifford enjoys hiking in New England, gardening, watching ice hockey games and reading good mystery novels.
