Regulations

Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge


The refuge is open daily from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset.


Pets must be kept on a leash.


Some areas are closed to visitors.
Closed areas are delineated on refuge maps (available at the Visitor Center and refuge office).

Permitted Activities Include:

  • Wildlife Observation
  • Photography
  • Nature Study
  • Walking on the trails and along some roads

Prohibited Activities Include:

  • Use of metal detectors
  • Use or possession of Firearms or other weapons
  • Picnicking
  • Collecting plants, animals or artifacts

Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge

Because of the critical nature of its habitats for wildlife, Fisherman Island is closed to the public. Trespassing (including boat landing or walking on the beach) is prohibited. Click here for information about our guided tours.
