Volunteer Orientation
March 6, 2004
9:00 am - 11:30 am

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is seeking responsible individuals who have an interest in wildlife conservation, history, native plant gardening, public relations, and environmental education.  A meeting for new and current volunteers will be held Saturday, March 6, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Refuge Visitor Center.  The meeting will cover upcoming activities, followed by a tour of the Refuge for new volunteers.

Individuals will work at the Refuge under a volunteer program that provides an excellent opportunity to learn about wildlife and habitat management techniques, wildlife census methods, conservation programs, and take part in environmental education programs and visitor services.  In most cases a volunteer may work as many hours as desired, with a flexible time schedule to accommodate weekday or weekend work.

The Visitor Center, which is open during the week from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. will reopen for weekend visitation starting March 6, 2004.Weekend hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Allee House will also reopen for weekend tours from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting March 6, 2004.  Both will remain open on weekends through June 13, 2004.

Individuals are needed to staff the Visitor Center and operate The Refuge Store on weekends and weekdays starting March.  Weekend volunteers choose a monthly four hour shift to staff the center (for example:  the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m.).  Volunteers are also needed to provide environmental education programs for school groups, conducting Refuge and Allee House tours, providing trail and native plant garden maintenance, and participating in highway cleanups.  Volunteers may be called upon for special wildlife projects throughout the year such as spring and winter bird surveys and horseshoe crab surveys. Come to the volunteer orientation meeting and find out how you can contribute your time to make a difference in your community.
