Environmental Education Programs Offerings

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge offer programs for schools, scouts, and general public groups. The following programs are offered:

1. A wildlife management tour of the refuge where we describe the management techniques used on the refuge to enhance the habitat for wildlife. We also include bird and other wildlife identification. An Auto-tour brochure is available for self-guided learning.

2. Nature walk where we cover various ecological topics, emphasize wetland value, and point out wildlife and their signs. Trails range from 1/4 to 1 mile in length.

3. Habitat studies. We assist in the identification of specimens. Groups over 5th grade may also choose to conduct water quality tests and do plant identification. Groups may choose among the following:

a. Freshwater Lesson Plan - Students use aquatic nets to dip in the water to catch animals.
b. Brackish Lesson Plan - Students use aquatic nets to dip in the water to catch animals. (Same lesson plan as Salt Marsh)
c. Salt marsh Lesson Plan - Students use aquatic nets to dip in the water to catch animals.
d. Bay Lesson Plan - Students use a seine net to catch animals and in the spring study of the horseshoe crab and shorebird connection is offered.
e. Forest Lesson Plan - Students use jars and trowels, and work in teams to search the leaf litter, soil and under logs for wildlife.
f. Meadow Lesson Plan - Students use aerial nets to sweep for insects and other invertebrates and learn techniques for identifying the species.
4. Wildlife movies are also available as are talks on various wildlife topics, such as endangered species and biodiversity.

5.  Teacher, scout leader and volunteer training is provided for all the programs provided.

Programs are available upon advance request. The above programs are also offered during festivals and special event weekends for the general public during the fall and spring.
