Steve Hill, Partners For Fish and Wildlife Coordinator

Regional Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program

Steve Hill coordinates the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program, along with serving as the Regional Farm Bill Conservation Coordinator. In the Service's Northeast Region for the past 12 years, he focuses on promoting conservation partnerships. Hill's current job involves providing assistance and guidance to local field offices from Virginia up to Maine that result in the effective and efficient implementation of habitat restoration on private lands.

Hill attended the University of Connecticut and received his master's degree in wildlife management from Frostburg State University in Maryland. His research focused on habitat selection and suitability of eastern phoebes. He put his studies to work as a wildlife biologist with the State of Connecticut's Wildlife Division, and he later joined the Service as a refuge/private lands biologist in the Mississippi Delta region.

Hill further expanded his experience by working as a refuge manager in both Arizona and Alaska. Among many career highlights, his experience in "bush" Alaska on the Alaska Peninsula and Becharof National Wildlife Refuge Complex is still fresh in his mind.

"A dream job, and the best place for any wildlife biologist who loves adventure," says Hill. "A great place to work, where every day is driven by the mission to conserve brown bears, caribou, moose, marine mammals, shorebirds and other migratory birds."

Hill's most prized accomplishment is the Service's Superior Service award for "outstanding contributions in the field of habitat restoration and development of cooperative partnerships."

"More than 70 percent of land in the lower 48 states is privately owned," he says. "Our nation's private landowners are critical to the success of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's mission to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats."

Hill fills his free time with hunting across the U.S., training of bird dogs, fishing and snapping candid photos of wildlife.
