Delaware Bay Estuary Project

During the past 14 years, part of Gregory Breese's work has been focusing on shorebirds and horseshoe crabs at Delaware Bay. Delaware Bay hosts the largest population of horseshoe crabs in the world. Shorebirds like the red knot feed on the eggs of horseshoe crabs as they prepare for their migration to the Arctic.

During the spring, Breese is out in the field capturing and monitoring shorebirds as part of an international team. Cannon nets are used to capture the birds, after which they are measured and banded. The banded birds are observed to learn about their use of Delaware Bay.

Working with a diverse team during the stopover is an intense and rewarding experience. In addition to scientists, many volunteers are needed. If you are interested in helping with this project, give Greg a call.
