Federal Aid to State Fish and Wildlife Programs
- Sport Fish Restoration Act funds were used to develop one of the most extensive harbors of refuge programs in the world. The intent of this program is to ensure that, in case of an emergency, no boater is more than 15 shoreline miles from a safe port while boating on the Great Lakes. The Act has played a major role in helping Michigan construct, expand and upgrade this harbor system.
Great Lakes Fishery Trust
- Since its inception in 1996, the Great Lakes Fishery Trust has provided more than $9 million in grants to enhance, protect and rehabilitate Great Lakes fishery resources. The Trust, administered by a six-member board representing the state of Michigan, Native American tribes, conservation groups and the Service, is an excellent example of a highly successful environmental partnership.
Coastal Projects Enhance Habitat
- In 2000, the Service's national Coastal Program expanded to include the Great Lakes coastlines. The program, a non-regulatory, partnership-based program, restores and protects coastal habitats, enhances fish passage in coastal watersheds and estuaries, and controls exotic invasive species that threaten coastal areas. The program is specifically designed to foster partnerships to achieve results. Among efforts by the East Lansing Ecological Services Office and various partners are projects to control invasive exotic plant species in the Grand Sable Dunes and other coastal areas, and a volunteer stewardship program at Detroit's Belle Isle to restore shoreline habitat.
Kirtlands Warbler Festival
- With other state, federal, and private groups, the Service participates in the annual Kirtland's warbler festival in Mio, Michigan. The endangered warbler draws bird watchers from around the world, and the festival provides an economic boost to rural Michigan.
