The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the disbursement of a total of $35,000 to two raptor rehabilitation projects in southeast Alaska. These funds, obtained by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation as a result of a 2008 court settlement against Alaska Light and Power, were transferred to the Service specifically for such purposes.
Of the total, $10,000 will go to the Juneau Raptor Center where, with an additional $10,000 in matching funds raised by the recipient, it will be used to build a clinic for the care of injured wild birds. The facility will be located just outside of Juneau near a popular hiking trail north of Brotherhood Bridge. For additional information, contact the Center at (907)-586-8393.
The remaining $25,000, augmented by $46,000 in matching funds, will be used by the Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Sitka to update mews and other facilities on its 17-acre campus in Sitka, and to pay a portion of the annual salary or the veterinarian who provides diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation services to injured raptors.
