The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Arcata Fish and Wildlife Office will sponsor two meetings of the Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative this September in California.  Other Service offices are also planning meetings for Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. The purpose of holding regional meetings is to gather information on Pacific Lamprey as it relates to the distribution, abundance, ongoing research, and threats throughout the species’ range.

The two California regional meetings include the Oregon component of the Klamath Basin. The meeting schedule for Eureka will cover the coastal drainages from Cape Mendocino to the Oregon Border and the entire Klamath Basin. The second meeting scheduled for Sacramento will cover Cape Mendocino south, including the Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins.

The Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative is an effort led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to facilitate communication and coordination relative to the conservation of Pacific lampreys throughout their range.  The goal of the initiative is to eventually develop a Pacific Lamprey Conservation Plan that will lead to restored Pacific lamprey populations and improvement of their habitat.

Attendees should register for the meeting by contacting Damon Goodman of the Arcata Fish and Wildlife Office via phone (707) 825-5155, or email -- damon_goodman@fws.gov.  Additional information on the Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative can be found at the following Website: http://www.fws.gov/pacific/fisheries/sp_habcon/lamprey/
