Spreading Avens
Geum radiatum

Status: Endangered

Family: Rose

Flowering/Fruiting Dates: June September/August - October

Habitat:  Southern Blue Ridge Mountains on high-elevation cliffs, outcrops, and steep slopes which are exposed to full sun; also in thin, gravelly soils of grassy balds near summit outcrops.

Distinguishing Characteristics:  Leaves mostly basal, with large terminal lobes: stems 8-20 inches tall: indefinite cyme of large, bright yellow flowers.  There are no other similar species of Geum in the Southeast.

Threats:  Trampling, commercial, residential and recreational development: possibly air pollution.

Species Distribution from known occurrences. Species may occur in similar habitats in other counties.Green counties indicate observed within 20 years. Yellow counties indicate an obscure data reference to the species in the county. Red counties indicate observed more than 20 years ago.
