SERVICE FUNDS ALLOCATED:$10,445 (24% of total project funding)
PROJECT PURPOSE: To establish Fox Creek Nature Lab, an experiential
education site in environmental sciences for Franklin County students and
North Carolina teachers; and, to facilitate the protection of 52
acres of riparian areas, wetlands and floodplain along Fox Creek and the
Tar River, in Franklin County, North Carolina.

PUBLIC BENEFITS:

Protection of the riparian area, wetlands and a floodplain along
the Tar River and Fox Creek
-
Monitoring and protection of habitat for the federally-endangered
Tar spinymussel (Elliptio steinstansana), and the dwarf wedge mussel (Alasmidonta
heterodon); and three federal species of concern, the Atlantic pigtoe (Fusconaia
mansoni), the yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa), and the yellow lance
(Elliptio lanceolata).

Promotion of environmental awareness through experiential education
of wetlands, North Carolina's federally and state listed endangered and
threatened species, natural resource management, and sustainable development.

Promotion of natural resource stewardship.

Monitoring of water quality in Fox Creek and the Tar River.
