Alewife are commercially important species that spawn in shallow streams as well as in the mainstem river. Alewife and American shad were among the first fish to be exploited commercially in North Carolina because their oily flesh allowed them to be salt preserved without ice or refrigeration. Alewife now benefit from the 925 miles of tributary streams and 78 miles of mainstem opened up by the Quaker Neck Dam removal, as well as the 76 miles of stream opened up by the Cherry Hospital Dam removal.
