Conserving this Nation’s fish and other aquatic resources cannot be successful without the partnership of Tribes; they manage or influence some of the most important aquatic habitats both on and off reservations. In addition, the Federal government and the Service have distinct and unique obligations toward Tribes based on trust responsibility, treaty provisions, and statutory mandates.
2011 Northwest Montana Native Youth Conservation Corps
In 2011, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Fisheries Program, began the second year of its summer work program for tribal youth on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana.
This eight-week program is a collaboration between Creston National Fish Hatchery, the Salish Kootenai College (SKC), and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Natural Resources Department (NRD).
The program provides employment for student crew leaders and 12 tribal member crew persons ages 15-18. Students learned about the biology and ecology of the plants and animals that their work affects and about propagation of the various fish species being raised at the hatchery.
