American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Projects
In April 2009, the National Elk Refuge was awarded $3.4 million investment through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for several projects that address habitat restoration, energy efficiency, and visitor service improvements. The primary project selected for National Elk Refuge Recovery Act funding was a $3.2 improvement and expansion of the refuge's existing irrigation system. Design work on the Irrigation Expansion Project began in Summer 2009, with most of the construction from May through August 2010. Refuge staff began running the new system in Spring 2011.
The National Elk Refuge also received $10,000 for energy conservations efforts, one of 43 projects selected to make National Wildlife Refuges and National Fish Hatcheries more energy effiicient and less reliant on non-renewable energy sources to support existing facilities. An additional $211,000 allotment enhanced exhibits at the Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center.
