ARVADA CELEBRATES NATIONAL TRAILS DAY
In celebration of National Trails Day, the Arvada Celebrates its Trails program, now in its 10th year, has again partnered with Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and Majestic View Nature Center. The focus of this year’s event will be on the natural environment and the many opportunities offered by the Arvada trails system and the National Wildlife Refuge System. In keeping with this theme, both locations will offer a variety of environmental education and entertainment activities for the entire family. These free events will take place at both Two Ponds NWR and Majestic View Nature Center on Saturday, June 4, 2011, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. with a 20-mile guided bicycle ride sponsored by the Denver Bicycle Touring Club. This free ride is open to everyone and includes an expert guide, map, snack stop, surprise gift and lunch. Reservations are not required. Participants should meet at 8:45am at the new Majestic View Nature Center parking lot, just west of Carr St. at 72nd Ave.
Another highlight of this year’s event is a pair of guided 5K walks that will begin and end at both locations in the morning. Free shuttles will run regularly between both sites, with complimentary refreshments served at both locations.
Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge activities will include a variety of environmental education displays and activities for kids and adults: live birds of prey, self-guided nature walks on the Refuge’s trail system, wildlife contraband viewing, wildlife photography, face painting and performances by “Mr. Bones,” and exciting and educational offerings from Mad Science, Birds of Prey Foundation, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and Wild Birds Unlimited.
Majestic View Nature Center activities will include live animal appearances by the Denver Zoo and the Butterfly Pavilion, a wildlife workshop and reptile/amphibian presentation by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, a native plant sale by Malara Gardens, nature exhibits, bird walks, kids’ environmental activities, Arvada trail maps, water conservation ideas, and a presentation by Arvada Animal Management.
These events are great opportunities for the public to experience nature and to learn more about two great nature facilities in Arvada. Mark your calendars, get those bicycles and walking shoes ready, and plan on spending a few hours enjoying your public lands and natural resources!
When: Saturday, June 4th, 10:00a.m. – 2:00p.m. [Open to the public]
