U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to Host Open House on Draft Fort Niobrara NWR River Recreation Management Plan and Environmental Assessment 

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will host an Open House to gather public comments on the Draft Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge River Recreation Management Plan and Environmental Assessment, which covers the nine miles of the Niobrara River that flow through the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (NWR).    The Open House will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm CST at the Holiday Inn Express meeting room in Valentine, Nebraska, 803 W Hwy 20. The Open House will provide the public with an opportunity to meet with Refuge Staff to discuss the Draft River Recreation Management Plan and Environmental Assessment. 

At the Open House, participants may meet one-on-one with refuge staff to discuss the proposed Management Plan and Environmental Assessment. In order to be included in the official public comment record, all comments on the plan must be submitted in writing.  Persons wishing to comment may submit written comments at the Open House; via e-mail to bernie_petersen@fws.gov or kathy_mcpeak@fws.gov; or to the refuge via fax or regular mail at the above contacts.  Ft. Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge Manager Royce Huber invites all interested parties to provide input in the development of the River Management Plan, which will direct management of that portion of the Niobrara River located on Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge.  The Draft Plan was made available for public review and comment on August 27, 2004 and will continue to be available for comment until October 25, 2004.    Copies of the Plan and Assessment are available at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge Complex Office, Valentine, NE, HC 14 Box 67; on the internet at http://fortniobrara.fws.gov/riverea; and, at the Sawyer Memorial Library in Valentine, NE,324 N.
