Jay assisted the ranch-hands at cow camp, in the Shoshoni National Forest, where the Pitchfork Ranch has a grazing lease with the National Forest Service.
Jay stayed up at cow camp for the first part of his exchange. The photo is a view from camp, with the horse corrals in the foreground.

"What I learned about ranch life was that unexpected events require extraordinary efforts," said Jay Slack.
During Jay's exchange, the Little Venus fire expanded beyond the Washakie Wilderness. Getting the cattle out of the lower valley became the order of business. Jay learned to cowboy up in a hurry!

After the cattle were brought to safety, cow camp was packed up and evacuated and the ranch hands opened the gate to the corral and pushed the horses down to the Pitchfork Ranch. Although the Little Venus fire started in the Washakie Wilderness and was to "let burn," it later grew and expanded into the lower country, with fire crews needing to be deployed.
