Flows through 3 states and empties into the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge

The Bear River originates in Utah, flows north into Wyoming, then into Idaho, and then back into Utah. The delta of the Bear River is on the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

Tributaries contain native cutthroat trout

In the past, there has been riparian vegetation loss which has resulted in streambank erosion along the river and its tributaries. This erosion contributes to the sediment load which is deposited in the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge impoundments.

The Partners Program is working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Conservation Districts, Environmental Protection Agency, Forest Service, Idaho Game and Fish, and Utah Division of Wildlife to improve habitat along Bear River.

Another program we are hoping to utilize more is the USDA Continuous Conservation Reserve Program. Native cutthroat trout are found in the tributaries of Bear River, and these areas receive high priority for restoration work with interested landowners.
