Like many other national wildlife refuges and other land management agencies and organizations, the MSC refuge depends on help from volunteers to complete the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service mission.
Visitor center volunteers help refuge staff in several different ways by answering visitors' questions, conducting tours, helping office staff, giving talks to school groups, performing trail work and helping with many other important projects.
Wildlife monitoring volunteers help on weekly bird surveys, annual crane census and regular crane monitoring.
Interns are college students seeking on-the-job experience or research opportunities.
SCA (Student Conservation Association) Resource Assistants are three-month positions that assist resource management (both the Fire crew and the Bio-team) and refuge outreach. Four SCA's came to the refuge in 1999 and served as either firefighters or assisted with biological monitoring. For more information on the Student Conservation Association, call 603/543-1700 or visit their website at http://www.sca-inc.org
Refuge housing is available for many volunteer positions.
