The Windom WMD recently constructed a new headquarters and interpretive center on the Wolf Lake WPA east of the city of Windom. The facility has an environmental education room, interpretive center and scenic views. Adjacent to the interpretive center is a new asphalt 3/4 mile interpretive walking trail complete with 3 observation decks, interpretive reading rail points, a floating dock, footbridge, 4 bench nodes and a photo blind. Visitors will be able to see restored wetlands, a natural prairie lake, native prairie, restored prairie and oak savanna.

The Wings on the Prairie Discovery Center provides an excellent opportunity for environmental education. The location of the building provides easy access to various wildlife habitats including a shallow prairie lake, several restored wetlands, native prairie, restored prairie, and oak savanna.

The interpretive center also houses the Simulated Action Firearms Education Training for Youth (SAFETY) system which is a laser modified hunting simulator designed to provide safe indoor hunter education. The system is used to teach youth the importance of safe and ethical hunting. Groups can reserve a time to use the system by contacting us.

The Environmental Education facilities and program are very new to the Windom District and will be expanded in the future. At this time school groups or interested groups such as scouting groups, 4-H groups, youth groups or other organizations should reserve time in advance to have a staff lead program at the facility.
