Availability of internship opportunities vary each year depending on budgets.


Attention: College Students and Recent Graduates
Each year, the refuge offers internships to college students interested in pursuing a career in the field of natural resources or environmental education. Typically, internships are hosted during the summer months, but may also be hosted during the spring, fall or winter if a qualified applicant is interested.

An intern is a college student or recent graduate that works full-time for 12 weeks or more to acquire experience or college credit. Interns may be provided with housing, if needed, and will receive a stipend or additional funding.

Visitor Services (Environmental Education / Interpretation)
Typically available during summer.  Interns will receive hands on, real world experience working with and assisting professionals regarding environmental education, interpretation and visitor services in a variety of tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting public at the  Visitor Center discover our Regional visitor information services, interactive exhibits, five-story observation tower, two learning classrooms, 110 seat auditorium, boardwalk and interpretive trails!  Assisting with development of visitor information, helping plan and facilitate special events, and assisting with recreation planning. Independent Study Projects and college credits available.  Schedule will include some weekend duties with other staff members.

Biological Internships
Typically available during summer.  Responsibilities may include exotic species control, trail maintenance, boundary posting, mowing and repairing public use structures, possible bird banding. In addition, experience assisting with biological surveys and research may be provided.
