Calhoun Division

The Calhoun Division is located just north of the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, in Calhoun County, Illinois. This 4,835-acre area of floodplain unit includes the 2,600-acre Swan Lake as well as ponds, backwater sloughs, wetland management units, agricultural land, bottomland forest, grassland, and the refuge headquarters.

Gilbert Lake Division

Gilbert Lake is in Jersey County, IL, just west of Grafton. Gilbert Lake totals 736 acres, consisting of a 250-acre lake bordered by brush, trees, small agricultural fields and grassland. Not only is this division important to wildlife in the floodplain, but it also contains some important historical sites.

Batchtown Division

The Batchtown Division lies within Pool 25 of the Mississippi River floodplain in Calhoun County, Illinois. The 3,500 acres making up the division contain a mosaic of forests, backwater sloughs, agricultural lands, lakes, ponds and wetland management units.

Portage Island Division

The Portage Island Division consists of one large and three small islands totaling 230 acres in Pool 26 of the Mississippi River. The islands are located just northeast of Portage des Sioux in St. Charles County, Missouri. The large island consists of bottomland forest and two backwater sloughs, one of which has silted closed. The other islands consist of bottomland forest.

Apple Creek Division

Located approximately five miles northwest of Carrollton in Greene County, IL, Apple Creek Division consists of 270 acres of bottomland forest, shallow wetlands, and retired agricultural fields at the confluence of Coates Creek and Apple Creek. Roughly 105 acres of the Division are wetlands. Another 160 acres are upland forest and retired agricultural fields reverting to forest.
