  • Identify sources of pollution
  • Investigate pollution effects on fish, wildlife, and habitat
  • Respond to oil and hazardous material spills or releases
  • Restore habitats and resources degraded by pollution
  • Provide technical expertise to other federal agencies, states, industrial, and agricultural interests

"Early Warning Program for Emerging Contaminants"

Funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, Field Office staff are part of this Great Lakes-wide investigation. Emerging contaminants are new contaminants or are older contaminants with a newly expanded distribution, altered release, or a newly detected presence in the environment. The investigation includes finding the sources of these contaminants, routes to exposure (i.e., how organisms come in contact with the contaminants) and impacts to fish and wildlife and their habitats.
