Canada lynx ( Lynx canadensis)

 

The Canada lynx, a threatened species, is a cat of northern forests. With it's large paws and long legs it can outcompete the bobcat in areas with heavy snows. Snowshoe hare is the lynx's primary prey and lynx population size and range closely follows the population fluctuations of snowshoe hare. The population of both species tends to follow a ten-year cycle where numbers expand to a peak and then drop to a low, providing a good example of the predator-prey cycle. When hares are abundant, lynx populations expand, and when the density of hares is reduced, lynx populations shrink.
