Lake
Sturgeon Research / Activities
The
East Lansing Field Office conducts activities
regarding lake sturgeon include converting many
hydro operations from peaking to run-of-river
modes of operation; working with Federal, State
and Local governmental agencies and private industries
to modify project proposals to afford better protection
to Michigan river systems; implementing effective
erosion control measures in construction and agricultural
projects and practices; protecting, mitigating
and restoring wetland resources that are the cornerstone
of high water quality and base flow conditions
in our waterways; and working with industry to
clean up contaminant areas of concern.
The
office also administers the Coastal Program and
has provided funding for lake sturgeon projects
in the Great Lakes.

Nick
Utrup works on lake sturgeon passage and related
issues throughout Wisconsin, which includes
both Great Lakes and Mississippi River drainages.
As a FERC hydropower biologist for the USFWS,
he works on several projects aimed at providing
passage of lake sturgeon past hydroelectric
dams. One particular area of concern is the
Menominee River where he is working with three
different power companies to pass sturgeon
past five dams. They are in the design phase
on most of these projects and are currently
monitoring sturgeon movement with underwater
video cameras and a PIT tag antennae. Sturgeon
movement data will help to design an appropriate
entrance device and develop optimum attraction
flows for future fish passage structures.
Darin
Simpkins works with the Coastal Program. The
program has provided funding for lake sturgeon
projects in the Great Lakes.
