 Volunteer Program

Volunteers at desk.jpg (16363 bytes)Seney National Wildlife Refuge relies on the contributions of over 40 volunteers.  Many volunteers staff the Visitor Center Information Desk and help visitors plan their day. They also staff activity booths during special events, lead school and nature programs, conduct wildlife surveys, assist with maintenance projects and a variety of other tasks.  Volunteers make a big difference at Seney National Wildlife Refuge!

Seney's volunteer program works in cooperation with the local RSVP program.  RSVP is the Retired Senior Volunteer Program that provides seniors sixty and over an opportunity to share a lifetime of experience through volunteer service in Delta, Menominee, Schoolcraft & Marinette counties.

Volunteers normally serve on a regular basis, such as one weekly four-hour shift at the visitor center and typically commute from the local area and nearby towns. A trailer pad with hook-ups may be possible for volunteers interested in working 20-40 hours weekly,  interested RV applicants need to be relatively self-sufficient and able to take care of their own facility maintenance.

During the summer, monthly training opportunities or social gatherings are a chance for volunteers, interns and staff to get to know one another.

Volunteer of the Year - 2009
George Phinney

The 2009 Volunteer of the year is George Phinney. His name has been in the running for the last three years but his contributions could not go unrecognized any longer. George has been an active member of the Refuge community for the last seven years. He has served as a tour bus driver and SNHA board member. He participated in a stream survey and has begun photography work for a shurb identification hand-out. He worked at the Visitor Center welcome desk with his wife, Dee, every Thursday and every other weekend. He was willing to fill in at the desk and as a bus driver when the need occured, and often at short notice. George was there to lend a hand at all Refuge special events this year. He helped host film fest. He fried fish for Children’s Fishing Day. He collected plants to display then helped setup the Art on the Lake tents, then he stayed to work a half day at the booth. He directed traffic and took photographs on Scout Day. He also photgraphed activites when we had school groups visit the Refuge. He gathered photographs and collected data from historical files for the DVD production. All that being said, its’ no wonder that George was a stand out candidate for the 2009 Volunteer of the Year. So, George, here’s to you and all that you do for the Refuge.
