Wildlife Wednesdays - Wednesday Evenings 7pm-9:30pm, June, July, August
Join us for a casual, guided auto tour. Tours take you onto part of the Marshland Wildlife Drive and also into the backcountry. This is a great chance to view wildlife, enjoy the scenery, and ask questions. Some seating is available in refuge vehicles, once those seats are full participants drive their own vehicles (caravan style) and use a radio to communicate with the guides.
Yellow Rail Tours- Thursday Evenings, May 22 & 29 2008
Pre-registration is required & space is limited - call 906.586.9851 ext 16
Tours will start at 9pm at the visitor center and go until late in the night.
Back by popular demand, two yellow rail tours will be offered this year. Is it likely you will see a yellow rail? Unfortunately that is hard to predict. Last year was not a good year for locating rails on the refuge. The tour will give you a great opportunity to experience sedge marsh habitat at night. Leconte's sparrows and Sedge wren's are other exciting species we are likely to hear or see.
The tour locations and conditions will be be unknown until just before the tours so participants must be willing and able to deal with diverse conditions. Hiking in wet, unstable terrain may be a possibility and plenty of biting insects are nearly guaranteed
Children's Fishing Day- Catch the Excitement!
Saturday June 7, 2008On Saturday, June 7, the Seney National Wildlife Refuge held its 19th annual Children's Fishing Day.
Below are photos and comments about the 2008 event. A total of 51 participants took advantage of the sunny weather for an enjoyable day of fishing on the Refuge.
Nine-year-old Dylan Sears, of Germfask, caught the largest northern pike measuring at 30 3/4 ? inches. Twelve-year-old Henry Sawaski, of Newberry, caught the largest yellow perch measuring at 10 1/4 inches. By the end of the day, eighteen pike and four perch were brought to the measuring station, as well as several bullheads and sunfish.
Throughout the day participants took a break from fishing to play games in the Visitor Center, while volunteers measured and recorded fish. After a long day of fishing, participants indulged in a free fish dinner served by volunteers and members of the Seney Natural History Association. 70 pounds of whitefish was served, along with corn, beans and brownies. Hundreds of prizes, including fishing poles, tackle boxes and lures were awarded to participants. No one walked away empty-handed.
