Surveys and Maps Branch

The Branch of Surveys and Maps is responsible for all force account, contracted, and reimbursable surveying and mapping activities which support the Region’s land acquisition program.  The Branch assists and advises on legal descriptions, as necessary, and provides technical expertise on all relevant boundary issues on Service lands.  Cartographic responsibilities include maintaining and updating status maps, producing special purpose maps as requested, drafting survey tract plats and tract maps in support of the land acquisition process, and converting hardcopy maps to electronic versions.

Responsibilities include staff and contract survey and mapping assignments, monitoring and directing survey and mapping processes and production, survey and mapping quality, survey contractor outreach and development, survey and mapping training program, and Contracting Office Technical Representative (COTR).

Designs and produces cartographic and Geographic Information System (GIS) products, including the Land Status Atlas, Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) briefing book, Migratory Bird Conservation Commission (MBCC) maps, special purpose maps for field offices, and regional external affairs office.  National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) and Realty mapping standards development.  Geographic Information System (GIS)/Computer Aided Design (CAD) technical assistance and training.

Performs boundary surveys throughout the Midwest Region, with particular attention to surveys on refuges in the southern half of the region.  Reviews descriptions and prepares exhibits for appraisers and realty specialists.  Researches information requests.  Prepares, administers, and reviews contract surveys.
