General Information & Rules and Regulations
How to Enjoy the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center
The Prairie Wetlands Learning Center is situated on the Townsend Waterfowl Production Area (WPA), part of Fergus Falls Wetland Management District and the National Wildlife Refuge System. Unlike most other WPA's, the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center is closed to hunting because of the educational and interpretive programs that are held year round.
Activities that can be enjoyed at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center include hiking, bird watching, wildlife photography and participating in one of the many environmental education and interpretive programs. Many programs explore the diversity of life in the wetlands, but swimming, wading and fishing are not allowed.
The trails are open dawn to dusk year round to foot traffic only. For the safety of our visitors and wildlife, horseback riding, ATV's, snowmobiles and bicycles are prohibited.
Smoking and the possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited anywhere on the Center grounds and in the buildings.
For a complete copy of the National Wildlife Refuge System regulations, see the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 50 via the internet.
A Word About Wildlife
Many of the animals seen at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center are small and appear to be harmless, but are wild animals, and should not be approached closely, harassed, fed or frightened. Such actions could be dangerous to you or the animals. Collection of any kind is prohibited unless special permission is granted from the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center Visitor Services Manager.
Public Facilities
The Visitor Center has telephones, bathrooms, water fountains, exhibits and information about the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center, the Fergus Falls Wetland Management District and much more. The building is completely handicapped accessible. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4 pm. Special seasonal hours may also apply.
The Prairie Wetlands Learning Center trail system is open dawn to dusk year round. For the safety of both visitors and wildlife, please stay on the trails.
Certain areas of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center may be closed or restricted from time to time, for habitat restoration or educational programs. These areas are clearly posted with signs.
